  1. Apply firm, direct pressure on the wound with a clean cloth or gauze until the bleeding stops.
  2. If the cloth becomes soaked, do not remove it. Place another layer on top and continue pressing.
  3. If the injury is on an arm or leg, elevate the limb above heart level if possible.
  4. Avoid using a tourniquet unless bleeding is severe and cannot be controlled with pressure.
  5. Wash your hands after completing first aid and before cleaning or dressing the wound.
